Tortall A Spy Guide Tamora Pierce Julie Holderman Timothy Liebe Megan Messinger Books

If you (like me) have been reading Tortall books for years and feel as though you know all the characters by heart, this book is a fun addition. It is NOT a new story-- rather, it's a collection of tidbits about the Tortall universe to help flesh out the world we know so well and fill in some gaps (and maybe give a few new tidbits!)

Included within are bits of correspondence that fit alongside stories already told by Tamora Pierce-- to go with the "spy's guide" there are some of the instructions quoted from in the Trickster books on how to be an effective spy. There are stolen letters from George and Myles' network of spies, and some bits on how their network can train new spies. There are biographies fleshing out info on many side characters like Thayet, Buri, Sarge, and Numair. There are a couple of different timelines-- one I found very amusing was a chronology of all historical rulers, with young Thom (Aly's brother) giving colorful commentary. There's also a detailed timeline to show how all the different books and characters fit together chronologically, from Alanna to up to Kel and Aly-- so you can see when certain characters were born in relation to events in another book. This was really helpful in solidifying a sense of how the different series (Alanna, Wildmage, Protector, Trickster) are spaced out.

Overall this was a fun little "extra" glimpse into the Tortall universe. It teased some new/different stories, filled in some blanks, and would be a great companion book for anyone looking to understand how all the different series fit together.

Tortall A Spy Guide Tamora Pierce Julie Holderman Timothy Liebe Megan Messinger Books Reviews

I love Pierce’s work and have for nearly two decades, so I felt that I needed to read this because it has some details about the characters we know and invested in that are not otherwise available. But it’s largely repeated information. The troop of being a textbook for spies is cute, but we have already read basically all of the advice given if you’ve read her other books. It’s very tedious to read instructions for something we ostensibly already know how to do with no story surrounding it to keep us engaged. It did make me go back and reread the Trickster books. On the whole I was disappointed.
I waited for this, but it's not what I expected. The illustrations of wild immortals don't really match descriptions from the books, and why are they included in this? On the other hand, the layout and organization principle as described at the beginning are great. There's overlap from the Tricksters Duet, with things Aly was taught, and it wasn't bad, just not what I expected at all.

Perhaps to a middle school reader this would be more enjoyable, but after 22 years immersed in Tortall, I felt underwhelmed.
If you are a fan of any of Tamora Pierce's books then this is an absolute must. I love the overall look and feel of it. I came to know of Tortall and its citizens and surrounding lands through the trilogy featuring Beka Cooper, and have steadily worked my way around to the earlier books that are set in Tortall and others more recent. I tend to revisit Beka's story quite often, as the story never gets old for me, and that in turn has led to me picking up her other books, this particular book offers more insight than ever on Tortall, its people, and, yes, its spies.
I started reading "A Spy Masters Guide" by Tamora Pierce.
It is written from George Cooper's perspective as a guide to his an Alanna' daughter Aly and sons Allen and Thomas . He found it and is compiling remembrance books for their children. To clear papers out of a room that will be a nursery for a late in life baby for he and Alanna.

It wasn't the late in life baby that set me to tears.
In the preface Alanna talks about retining as Kings Champion.

I have been reading Tortall books since I was 9 years old. I aged with the characters in the books. Ran into similar life choices of work and family. It was nice of the author to keep aging characters as they would in real life.

But I tell you what.
I am glad this is an audio book. This time.

I have to keep stopping the story.
Because I don't want the story to end After 32 years of reading her story. I'm not ready for the story to end.
I feel like I'm losing a friend but that it would be impossible and an injustice to such an amazing author and such a wonderful tale not to keep reading.

Thank you Tamora for giving a shy little girl stories to love for a lifetime. And forgive me for giving away some of the story in my review.
Filling in a few of the blanks for the kingdom of Tortall and the realms’ operations, this new addition to the canon of Tamora Pierce’s universe is informative, addictive, and downright funny.

Presented as a series of letters, notes, journal entries, and a manual for spies-in-training, the format is more like glimpses into forgotten rooms, but do NOT let that hold you back; it’s more than worth reading, and as such, it’s also very easy to find stopping points when needed.

Apart from all that, it also drops some astounding hints about the realm’s spies, their true identities and work, as well as some tantalizing tidbits that leave the reader wanting more.

As a long time fan of Pierce’s work, this book more fully immersed me into the minds and hearts of characters and places I’ve come to know and love. All that’s left to do now is wait for the next installment!
There were parts of this book that were interesting in terms of past characters you've read about, and other parts made you want to fall asleep. This is literally a 'how to spy' in tortall. I wish that it had been written in a way that was a bit more engaging. It was often in the form of letters, which was fine, but you weren't always sure of who was talking or what they were referring to. I had to skip ahead a bunch of times because there were parts that were just not very engaging.
If you (like me) have been reading Tortall books for years and feel as though you know all the characters by heart, this book is a fun addition.
