Stalker A novel Joona Linna Lars Kepler Books

In all fairness, I would rate this a 4.5 . Compared to The Sandman this did not pull me in obsessively until halfway through the novel, and then it was full speed ahead. It definitely became a page turner of the highest order, with a whiplash from turning the pages so fast to see what was happening. The ending practically destroyed me so be forewarned. In this fifth novel of the Joona Linna series, a stalker is out filming women and then brutally disfiguring them and ending their lives. The race is on to figure out who the women are and who is this stalker. A psychiartist becomes involved in the search as he tries to hypnotize a former patient currently in prison to see if his memories provide any connection between the murders. As usual, the authors provide short chapters which heighten suspense and keep the drama accelerating. You just can't go wrong with this Nordic couple.

Stalker A novel Joona Linna Lars Kepler Books Reviews

When the first Joona Linna novel, The Hypnotist, appeared in the US, it got raves, it got ME hooked, and, apparently, it got a little lost in the crowd of Scandinavian thrillers being loosed upon the public in the aftermath of the Stieg Larrson explosion. So, I.m glad to see that Knopf is not only continuing the importation but re-issuing the earlier books (this is number 5) in what appears to be a new "matching" edition (MY first 3 are in the old cover style, but I'm not upset,,,I,,, we need to talk...I-well, I digress, is what I do)

What can I say that will make a larger audience read these? Can I tell you that "Lars Keppler" writes so well that "he" makes Thomas Harris look like Beatrix Potter? Can I tell you that Joona Linna (along with Erik Maria Bark, the above noted Hypnotist) makes all other Swedish cops look like refugees from Car 54 where are you ? Can I promise that no one will take these books and turn them puerile for the movies like they did with Larrson and Nesbro? (Well, actually, I can't. But we can hope-and the SWEDISH versions of Salender with Nomi Rapace-I think I spelt that right- are great)

Look, I can tell you anything. But, until you read these Heart-stoppingly good stories, you won't believe.

Then... you will
"Stalker" is the fifth book in the Joona Linna series by "Lars Kepler", actually a Swedish husband and wife team. When I am offered a book (from Vine) by an author not known to me, I always go back to check on their prior work, look over their reviews, and try to get a feel for their subject matter and writing skills. I have enjoyed some (because I haven't read all of it yet) of Jo Nesbo's work and realize that the Nordic mind seems to work a bit differently than ours -- or perhaps the Swedish language (in this case) doesn't quite translate cleanly into English. That is a common problem when reading the efforts of foreign authors. Foreign idioms and certain phrases may have a second implied meaning which is usually a bit difficult to guess. In fact sometimes they can seem totally inappropriate which may cause you to miss their meaning completely.

In any event, every author has their own style of writing; be it colorful or bland, verbose or sparse, primarily narrative or descriptive, etc. And then there is the wide range of humor whether appropriate or inappropriate, sarcastic or self-deprecating, offensive (insult) or slapstick, blatant or subtle. Humor can be used to distract, to emphasize a point, or to cause a break in the action. A good writer knows when to break a mood which has become too dark or grisly to tolerate for long. Not only is it interesting to read a new author and try to sync your thoughts with their pacing, but it often takes a while for the reader to visualize what is happening to the characters based on the detail provided in the narrative and descriptions.

Even though this novel is the fifth in the series, you can comfortably read it as though it is a stand-alone effort. You can quickly get on board with the main character and place his position within the Swedish culture. Flashes of his backstory help orient you to how he ended up in this particular place but there is no doubt a lot of information covered in the first four novels to show us how he developed into who he is now. Joona Linna is a complicated man who has been molded by his past experiences with the National Crime division, recently returning to his colleagues after being forced by a threat to his family to stage his own death to disappear. He rejoins an old psychologist specializing in war trauma and finds himself unofficially partnered with new members of his old force with the goal of discovering the identity of a new serial killer, locating that person, and then capturing him.

This is a captivating story with a meandering path that offers little in the way of clues and even less in the offering of suppositions. The suspect is meticulous, patient, and somehow selects his victims based on a particular trait. The clues are so sparse and the perpetrator so narrowly focused that the authors don't even have to throw in a few red herrings. I can only recall two rather arcane phrases that may have pointed me in the proper direction but 90% of this story is about trying to figure out who the bad actor is. Masterfully written with colorful characters and a dark and foreboding atmosphere, I had difficulty putting this novel down even for a few minutes. I was hooked by expert writers who had their way with me all the way through to the end. This is a very intelligent thriller full of surprises and written in a style like no other. The authors have hit their stride and are bound to gain a following after being discovered by more readers. Pick this book up and enjoy the chase. It is really like no other.

BACKSTORY To This Review

If you have ever watched the old Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough At Last" starring Burgess Meredith, you will understand my fascination and addiction in reading and collecting books. I am an inveterate reader and estimate that in addition to the thousands of comic books and magazines I perused growing up, that I have read over 10,000 novels and have built a personal library numbering in excess of 5,000 books. The books I keep are the ones that have entertained me, have taught me something, and have kept me engaged in my spare time while traveling or waiting for something. It is not a hardship waiting an extra hour to see a doctor or other professional, I always take a book with me. Long boring flights never happen to me. Riding as a passenger in a car (although I would rather drive) is just another excuse to read a good book.

The major stroke of luck that hit me like a bolt of lightning was an email inviting me to join the Vine program, offering me free books in exchange for an accurate and truthful review. That has allowed me to not only order the new releases from some of my favorite authors but also gives me the opportunity to take a chance on an unknown (at least to me) author whose subject matter, writing style, and unique spin on life might teach me something new and/or entertain me for a few hours. It is amazing how many good new authors are out there, spending countless hours researching and writing, putting together unusual plot lines, and drawing you into their stories with their deft use of words. I have a great appreciation of humor in all its forms and have often found myself laughing out loud -- occasionally at inappropriate times.

Of course with all the bright shining stars (Leslie Wolfe, Allen Eskins, Jo Nesbo, etc.) naturally come a a few clinkers, but I'd have to say that the vast majority of published new writers really have shown me a lot of skill. That has certainly been the case with "Lars Kepler" a Swedish husband and wife team who write captivating novels involving serial killers. You might want to ask yourself why I might be considered somewhat knowledgeable about serial killers. Psychologists believe that early episodes in a person's life often influence their path while growing up. I happened to grow up about 22 miles from the killing ground of Ed Gein (Plainfield, WI), an unusual man with strange proclivities who became the inspiration for the films "Psycho", Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and a host of others. I still have the original 1955 Life Magazine that talked about his exploits and covered his trial., and I picked up the telephone in 1982 and spoke with him at his place of incarceration not long before he died. There was nothing subtle about Ed Gein ("call me Eddy") and therefore no subject that he was unwilling to talk about.

My interest in serial killers grew over the years as others were exposed for who they were. These included Jeffrey Dahmer (Wisconsin once again), Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and many others. In 2016 I enrolled in the FBI's Citizen Academy and made a three hour round trip to attend classes for eight weeks. Fortunately I was also selected to make the trip to the FBI's Washington D.C. Headquarters and then on to Quantico for further instruction. It was in D.C. that I was able to chat with the head of the Behavioral Analysis Unit. He asked our class who the movie "Psycho" was based on and I was the only one to raise my hand. After talking about Eddy for a few minutes we were then introduced to the infamous James Comey, but I was much more interested in getting back together with the BAU head. He was obviously brilliant and knowledgeable but also engaging and insightful. I hope that the dialogue above wasn't a waste of time for you. Perhaps I should have left that background narrative out.but I believe that what I have to say in this review should come with some qualification. I can honestly say that if I had been younger and willing to relocate to Virginia, I would have pulled up stakes and moved to Quantico to pursue my dream job -- assuming that they would have me.
Of course my favorite characters are Joona and Saga. She was non-existent in this novel. Joona comes on late and the story seems to make up for lost time. The 2nd half that was intense but just too much time on Erik. A bit muddled. Honestly, not my favorite of the series but look forward to the next one.
What a fantastic roller coaster ride this book is. Joona Linna is the BEST detective ever. He sees things everyone misses and has an analytical mind and the ability to get the job done. One of the most breathtaking books I have read probably since the last one by Lars Kepler. One more in the series and I can't wait until it's released in the US. I believe these books should be read in order as many characters from previous books feature in this one. 5 stars doesn't do it justice.
